What appears to be an ordinary business complex in the heart of Jos by day is reportedly transformed into a completely different scene once night falls, sparking concern among residents and raising questions about the growing social crisis facing vulnerable young people.
Located at the bustling Old Airport Junction, Nana Plaza is home to shops, offices, and various legitimate businesses during daylight hours. Food vendors, beer parlours, and small-scale traders also operate around the area, serving customers throughout the day.
But according to reports, the atmosphere changes dramatically after sunset.
As the evening crowd begins to gather, roadside food sellers, cigarette vendors, and other traders take over the surroundings. Among them are groups of young men allegedly involved in the sale of cigarettes, alcohol, and other illicit substances under the cover of darkness.
However, behind the busy commercial activities lies a troubling reality.
Sources claim that from as early as 8 p.m., parts of the area become a meeting point for commercial sex activities involving teenage girls, some reportedly as young as 14 years old. The activities are said to continue until the early hours of the morning.
An undercover investigation into the area uncovered heartbreaking stories from several young girls who say they were pushed into the lifestyle by circumstances beyond their control.
Many cited poverty, family abandonment, displacement caused by violence, lack of education, unemployment, peer pressure, and the daily struggle for survival as factors that led them down the path.
One teenage mother revealed that her life changed after becoming pregnant at a very young age. According to her, the man responsible allegedly abandoned her, while her family rejected her, leaving her with no support system and a child to care for.
She explained that after dropping out of school, she took up small jobs to survive before being introduced to men willing to pay for sexual services. What started as an attempt to earn extra income gradually became her primary source of survival.
Another teenager narrated how violent attacks in her community forced her family into displacement. After losing loved ones and struggling in difficult living conditions, she said she eventually left in search of opportunities to support her younger siblings.
An 18-year-old mother of two also shared her experience, blaming peer influence and poor choices for her situation. She disclosed that she abandoned her education and followed friends into prostitution, a decision she says brought years of hardship, multiple pregnancies, and regret.
She admitted that earnings fluctuate significantly, with some nights yielding modest income while others leave many struggling to make enough money to eat.
Despite their different backgrounds, one message remained consistent among the young women interviewed: many expressed deep regret about their circumstances and a desire for a better life if given the opportunity.
The revelations have sparked fresh debate about rising poverty, youth vulnerability, child exploitation, and the urgent need for intervention programs aimed at protecting at-risk children and young women.
Observers say the situation highlights broader societal challenges that require attention from families, community leaders, security agencies, and government authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, no official response had been obtained from the relevant authorities regarding the allegations and concerns raised.
For many residents, however, the growing reports serve as a stark reminder that behind the bright lights and busy streets of the city lies a hidden struggle affecting some of its most vulnerable young people.
