A massive theft scandal has rocked a government science college in Niger State after police arrested six suspects, including a serving NYSC member, a school security guard, and a volunteer staff member, over the mysterious disappearance of dozens of computers and other expensive ICT equipment.
The shocking incident unfolded at Martin Sanda Girls Day Science College in Paiko Local Government Area, where thieves allegedly broke into the school’s ICT centre and carted away 59 desktop computers, 57 keyboards, a lithium solar battery, an inverter, and a current control panel.
The theft was reportedly uncovered on June 21 after a vigilant corps member noticed that a window leading into the ICT room had been forcefully broken. A thorough inspection exposed the staggering scale of the loss, leaving school authorities stunned.
Following the report, detectives from the Paiko Police Division immediately launched an investigation. Acting on intelligence, officers tracked down and arrested six individuals allegedly linked to the operation.
Those arrested include Adamu Hamisu, an assistant contractor from Kuje, Abuja; Aminu Garba; computer installer Abdul Hamid Mikailu; Idris Zakariya, a volunteer staff member at the college; a serving NYSC member identified as Ekene Asor Matthew; and the school’s security guard, Abubakar Mohamed.
The involvement of insiders has sparked fresh questions about how such a large quantity of equipment could disappear unnoticed from the school premises.
Police say investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact role played by each suspect and to recover the stolen items. Detectives are also working to uncover whether more people were involved in the alleged theft.
Authorities have assured the public that additional updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
