A major security operation in Anambra State has ended with the deaths of three suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), following a fierce gun battle with security forces.
The operation, carried out by troops of Sector 5, Joint Task Force South-East Operation UDO KA alongside other security agencies, was reportedly launched after intelligence revealed that armed suspects disguised in military camouflage and Nigeria Police uniforms were planning violent attacks in the area.
According to a statement released by the Nigerian Army on its official Facebook page, the joint security team swiftly tracked the suspects along the Ogboji–Ajali axis in Orumba South Local Government Area on June 23, 2026.
The suspects, who were travelling in a white Toyota Sienna vehicle, allegedly opened fire when intercepted, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire. At the end of the operation, three suspected ESN operatives were killed.
Security personnel later searched the scene and recovered a cache of dangerous weapons and explosives, including a PKM machine gun with 53 rounds of ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, additional 7.62mm and 5.56mm ammunition, four improvised explosive devices (IEDs), communication gadgets, a laptop, and the vehicle reportedly used by the suspects.
Troops also recovered identification and financial documents believed to belong to members of the group, a development security authorities say could aid ongoing investigations and future operations.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations across the South-East as part of efforts to curb violent crimes and improve security in the region.
