Fresh violence has once again thrown communities in Plateau State into mourning after suspected armed attackers killed a respected community leader and claimed the life of a woman who had been battling gunshot wounds following an earlier attack.
The latest tragedy occurred in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas, where 58-year-old community leader Daniel Pulle and Deborah Benjamin Kak lost their lives in separate incidents linked to suspected Fulani terrorists.
According to the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth-Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, the attacks happened on Sunday evening, deepening fears over the worsening security situation across the state.
Pulle, a prominent leader from Gana-Ropp in Ropp District, was reportedly ambushed at about 7:55 p.m. while riding his motorcycle home. The attackers allegedly opened fire near a bridge leading into his community, killing him just moments before he reached home.
In a separate incident, Deborah Benjamin Kak, who had been shot during an attack on her residence in Lwa village, Bachi District of Riyom LGA on June 26, later died while receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
The Berom Youth-Moulders Association condemned the continued wave of deadly attacks, expressing deep concern over the persistent loss of innocent lives. The group urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Conflict journalist Kim Masara Usman also confirmed the incidents in a social media post, describing the killing of Daniel Pulle as a heartbreaking act of violence.
According to him, the community leader was simply returning home to his family when gunmen suddenly opened fire, killing him on the spot. He also confirmed that Deborah Benjamin Kak eventually succumbed to the injuries she sustained during the earlier attack despite medical efforts to save her life.
The fresh attacks have reignited concerns over the recurring violence in Plateau State, with residents once again calling on the government and security agencies to take decisive action to end the bloodshed and restore peace to the affected communities.
