Residents of Minna were left buzzing after a surprise government crackdown exposed what authorities described as illegal mining activities happening right inside a residential community in Niger State.
In a dramatic evening operation that felt straight out of an action movie, seven suspected illegal miners were reportedly arrested during a coordinated raid led by the Niger State Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammed Qasim Danjuma.
The enforcement team stormed an area behind Bilkebeb Shango in Minna at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following reports of suspicious mining activities allegedly taking place within the neighborhood.
But that wasn’t all — authorities also seized nine motorcycles believed to have been used to support the illegal operations, raising eyebrows among locals who never imagined such activities could be unfolding so close to home.
Officials described the discovery as alarming, warning that illegal mining in residential areas poses serious risks to human lives, properties, and the environment.
The arrested suspects, alongside the confiscated motorcycles, were later handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State for deeper investigation and possible prosecution.
Speaking during the operation, Commissioner Danjuma, who was accompanied by the Ministry’s Director of Administration, AGM Zuma, as well as top NSCDC operational officers, stressed that the state government is intensifying efforts to flush out illegal miners from communities.
According to him, the latest raid is part of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s “New Niger Agenda,” an initiative focused on sanitising the mining sector, tackling unlawful excavation, and ensuring stricter monitoring of mineral resources across the state.
The commissioner issued a stern warning to anyone secretly engaging in illegal mining, making it clear that authorities would not hesitate to unleash the full force of the law on offenders.
He further assured residents that the government remains committed to protecting lives, preserving the environment, and boosting state revenue through a safer and properly regulated mining industry.
As security agencies continue investigations, many residents are now wondering: How long had the alleged underground operation been happening unnoticed in the heart of Minna?
