In a shocking and terrifying midnight assault, suspected bandits launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mandaragira, Borno State, leaving several security personnel dead and others seriously injured.
The attack, which reportedly occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, threw the community into chaos as heavily armed insurgents stormed the military position in a fierce gun battle that lasted for hours.
According to military sources, five Nigerian soldiers lost their lives during the confrontation, while three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were also killed. Several other personnel sustained injuries and were immediately evacuated by air for urgent medical treatment.
Even more alarming, the attackers reportedly made away with some key military equipment believed to be crucial for ongoing security operations in the region, raising fresh concerns about the growing boldness of insurgent groups operating in the North-East.
Despite the tragic losses, the military says the troops fought back fiercely, eliminating a significant number of the attackers during the encounter. Authorities insist that the insurgents suffered heavy casualties as soldiers defended the base against the surprise invasion.
In an official statement, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna M. Sani, Acting Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed the incident and reassured the public that the military remains fully in control of the Mandaragira base.
He explained that reinforcements and critical combat resources have already been deployed across the North-East to strengthen security operations and maintain pressure on insurgent groups threatening peace in the region.
Military authorities further disclosed that troops continue to dominate the area, while ongoing clearance and exploitation operations are being carried out to track down fleeing attackers and prevent further threats.
The latest attack highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of Borno State despite continuous military offensives against insurgent elements. Many Nigerians have since reacted with concern, mourning the fallen heroes while calling for stronger measures to tackle the insecurity affecting communities in the region.
As investigations and military operations continue, the nation watches closely to see what comes next in the battle against insurgency in the North-East.
