A heartbreaking disaster unfolded in Lagos on Friday after a three-storey building still under construction suddenly gave way in the upscale Lekki Phase 1 area, leaving one person dead and another missing as emergency teams raced against time.
The shocking incident occurred around midday at Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, sending panic through the neighborhood as the structure partially collapsed with workers reportedly inside.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency responders were immediately mobilized after distress calls flooded in. Rescue teams, including paramedics and firefighters, stormed the scene in a desperate effort to save those trapped beneath the debris.
Preliminary reports revealed that nine people were caught up in the collapse. Seven adult men were successfully pulled out alive and given emergency medical attention. Sadly, one victim was found dead at the scene, while another remains unaccounted for, raising fears that he may still be trapped under the wreckage.
Rescue operations continued deep into the day as officials painstakingly removed heavy concrete slabs and searched every corner of the collapsed structure. Authorities said efforts were being intensified to ensure no victim was left behind.
Specialized agencies were also drafted in to support the operation. Building control officials provided technical equipment to aid the rescue mission, while environmental teams assisted in clearing debris from the disaster zone.
Investigators are also working to determine whether additional workers may have been present at the site when the building came crashing down.
Reacting to the tragedy, emergency management authorities stressed that saving lives remains their top priority, assuring residents that all available resources have been deployed to locate the missing victim and secure the area.
The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety standards and construction practices in Lagos, as many residents continue to question how such a devastating collapse could occur in one of the city’s most prominent districts.
As rescue workers battle the clock, families and residents anxiously await updates, hoping the missing victim will be found alive.
