A major military operation has dealt another heavy blow to terrorist groups operating in Katsina State after Nigerian troops launched a surprise dawn raid on a notorious criminal hideout, leaving two suspected terrorists dead and several others fleeing with gunshot wounds.
The daring operation, carried out by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA under Operation Clean Sweep III, targeted a suspected terrorist enclave in Ginchawa, Matazu Local Government Area, following credible intelligence about the activities of armed criminals in the area.
According to an operational report, soldiers from the 17 Brigade stormed the hideout in the early hours of Monday, catching the terrorists off guard. The gunmen reportedly attempted to fight back but were overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower, forcing them to abandon their camp and escape into nearby bushes.
The soldiers immediately pursued the fleeing suspects along their escape routes before eventually losing contact with them. However, evidence found at the scene indicated that several of the fleeing terrorists sustained gunshot injuries during the fierce exchange.
During a thorough search of the abandoned camp, the troops recovered a cache of dangerous weapons and other items, including two PKT machine guns, one locally fabricated firearm, an AK-47 magazine, 75 rounds of 7.62mm NATO linked ammunition, three motorcycles, two mobile phones, and a pair of camouflage uniforms.
The military also recovered several cows and goats believed to have been stolen from innocent residents by the terrorists during previous attacks.
Military authorities confirmed that two suspected terrorists were neutralised during the operation, while efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend those who escaped.
The successful raid forms part of the military’s intensified campaign to dismantle terrorist networks, recover stolen property, and restore peace across the North-West region as security forces continue their relentless crackdown on criminal elements.
