A wave of panic swept through Lagos on Monday after a mysterious explosion ripped through the busy Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, leaving one person injured and traders scrambling for safety.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the blast was caused by a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) hidden inside a vehicle parked within the bustling commercial area.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed that security operatives swiftly responded after receiving distress calls about the explosion. He explained that the police immediately deployed officers, including experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, to secure the area and prevent further danger.
According to the police commissioner, preliminary investigations revealed that the explosive device had been planted beneath the passenger side of the affected vehicle. The device detonated the moment the vehicle’s engine was started, triggering the loud explosion that sent shockwaves across the market.
One person sustained injuries during the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the victim is receiving treatment and remains in stable condition.
Following an intensive search of the area, bomb disposal experts confirmed that no additional explosive devices were discovered, easing fears of another possible blast.
Police authorities have urged traders, residents and business owners in Mushin to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation has been fully brought under control while investigations continue to uncover those behind the suspected bomb attack.
