The mystery surrounding the gruesome killing of retired OGTV broadcaster Kitan Oyesiku, fondly known as Aunty Kitan, has taken a chilling twist after police arrested three suspects, including her former security guard, who allegedly confessed that the murder was carried out simply to “teach her a lesson.”
The shocking revelation has sent waves of outrage across Ogun State and beyond, as many struggle to understand how a woman widely respected in the media industry met such a horrific end.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the veteran broadcaster was brutally murdered inside her residence in the Kobape area of Abeokuta. Her 38-year-old security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, was also killed during the deadly attack. Investigators found Adetayo’s lifeless body at the security post, while Aunty Kitan’s body was discovered inside her apartment. Her Lexus RX 330 SUV was also stolen from the scene.
Barely five days after the double murder, police announced the arrest of three suspects identified as Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillip (22), Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola (27), and Sobu Obafunsho (36).
Police investigations revealed that Sodeinde, who previously worked as Aunty Kitan’s security guard, allegedly masterminded the operation after nursing resentment against his former employer. Authorities said he recruited the two other suspects to execute the attack.
Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni disclosed that detectives recovered the stolen Lexus near the principal suspect’s residence. Although the number plates and ignition key had been removed, investigators found the vehicle’s registration plate hidden beneath one of the seats, helping them positively identify it.
In another dramatic breakthrough, detectives reportedly recovered a handwritten note allegedly left behind by the suspects. Forensic analysis of the note provided crucial leads that eventually led to their arrest.
Sodeinde was tracked down at a construction site in Ibara GRA, where he had been working as a labourer. During interrogation, police said he admitted participating in the murder, claiming the attack was intended to “teach her a lesson” over grievances he allegedly held from the time he worked for the deceased.
Police further revealed that the suspects first overpowered the security guard and forced him to grant them access into the residence before launching the fatal attack on Aunty Kitan. They later killed the security guard to eliminate any witness.
Searches conducted at locations linked to the suspects led to the recovery of several exhibits, including a broken hammer, a cutlass, a wooden plank, a black pen, and other items believed to be connected to the crime.
While displaying the suspects, the Commissioner of Police stressed that investigations are still ongoing and that the suspects remain entitled to fair legal process despite the confessional statements and evidence already obtained.
Reacting to the breakthrough, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Wale Olarewaju, commended the police for swiftly uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic killing of the respected broadcaster and bringing the suspects to justice.
The disturbing case continues to generate widespread reactions as Nigerians await the prosecution of those accused of carrying out the brutal double murder.
