A man accused of murdering Delta-based cleric, Bishop Chinedu Okonkwo, has been arraigned in court after police investigations linked him to the shocking crime.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed that the suspect was handed over by the Anambra State Police Command after his arrest while allegedly attempting to sell the late bishop’s Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the tragic incident occurred on May 12, 2026, in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. Police said the suspect, who reportedly worked as the bishop’s driver, fled after the alleged murder.
Investigators revealed that operatives of the Anambra State Police Command tracked and arrested the suspect on May 13 in Akwuzu when he allegedly tried to dispose of the bishop’s vehicle.
Following a preliminary investigation, the suspect was transferred to the Delta State Police Command for further interrogation.
Police also disclosed that the investigation uncovered another troubling allegation. Before working for the bishop, the suspect had reportedly been employed by a company in Rivers State, where he allegedly stole a 2016 Toyota Corolla, sold it, and disappeared.
Authorities say the suspect has now been formally charged to court over the alleged murder, while legal proceedings are expected to determine his guilt or innocence.
The shocking case has sparked reactions from residents and members of the Christian community, with many demanding justice for the late cleric and urging employers to conduct thorough background checks before hiring domestic or personal staff.
