A devastating road accident has thrown families into mourning after at least five people were killed and eight others seriously injured in a horrific crash along a highway in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a passenger trailer carrying about 40 travelers and a tanker. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with survivors screaming for help while emergency responders rushed to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.
Confirming the accident, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Desk Officer in Agaie, Hussaini Guregi, disclosed that the passenger-laden trailer was travelling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Shagamu in Ogun State when disaster struck.
According to Guregi, five passengers died instantly from the impact, while eight others sustained severe injuries and were immediately taken to the General Hospital in Agaie for urgent medical attention.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was triggered by a faulty tanker abandoned on the road. In an attempt to avoid colliding with the stationary vehicle while overtaking, the trailer driver reportedly lost control, leading to the fatal accident.
“The trailer carrying the passengers tried to avoid the stationary tanker, but the driver lost control, resulting in the crash,” Guregi explained.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital Agaie mortuary, while relevant authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The heartbreaking incident has once again raised concerns over the dangers posed by broken-down vehicles left unattended on Nigerian highways and the urgent need for stricter road safety enforcement to prevent similar disasters.
