Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has criticised what she described as a growing lack of punctuality and professionalism among some actors in the Nigerian film industry.

The 59-year-old actress spoke about the issue during an interview on Jay On Air TV, where she recalled witnessing actors arrive several hours after their scheduled call time.

Bukky Wright calls out latecomers

According to the veteran actress, some actors who are expected to be on set as early as 9am sometimes do not show up until around 2pm or 3pm.

She explained that such behaviour can disrupt the production process and cause unnecessary delays.

Bukky said:

“Sometimes I will go to locations. These days, I will see a lot of actors that are meant to be on set by 9am just strolling in by 2 or 3pm.”

‘Old Nollywood had discipline’

Comparing the current situation with her early years in the industry, Wright said the old Nollywood was characterised by greater discipline, dedication and commitment to producing quality films.

She recalled the period fondly, saying:

“The old Nollywood, I’ll tell you, had the spice. They were wonderful actors and people were really dedicated to their jobs. Back then, we had a lot of discipline.”

The actress suggested that the professionalism she experienced earlier in her career contributed to the quality and work ethic associated with that era of Nollywood.

Wright also reflected on the early stages of her career, revealing that Nollywood was largely dominated by men when she entered the industry.

Rather than allowing the environment to discourage her, she said she was determined to succeed.

“I remember when I came in because it was mainly a men-dominated industry, but I was like, no, I’m going to do it. And I did it.”

After spending several years away from the Nigerian movie scene, Bukky Wright has returned to film and television and remains active in the industry.

She has also ventured into production, with The Return of Omotola Johnson among her recent projects.
