Fear and outrage are spreading across Nigeria as shocking cases of alleged ritual killings and gruesome murders continue to surface, leaving many citizens questioning how deep the disturbing trend has gone.
In what many are calling a frightening sign of worsening insecurity and moral collapse, law enforcement agencies across different states have uncovered horrifying cases linked to suspected ritual practices, human body part trafficking, and brutal murders allegedly committed in the desperate pursuit of money and power.
One of the most shocking incidents reportedly happened on May 15, 2026, when police in Enugu State arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Onyebuchi Anikwe for allegedly attacking and killing his own 60-year-old mother with a cutlass in what authorities suspect to be a ritual-related crime. The heartbreaking incident, which occurred in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, left many residents speechless, as social media users reacted with disbelief over how greed could allegedly push someone to such an extreme act.
But that was not the only disturbing revelation.
Earlier in April 2026, security operatives in Kwara State reportedly arrested a suspect accused of digging up a relative’s grave and exhuming a skull allegedly intended for the illegal human body parts market — a criminal network often linked to ritual practices. Authorities revealed that intelligence gathering and collaboration among security agencies played a key role in the arrest.
January also witnessed horrifying cases that shook communities to their core.
In Osun State, three suspects were reportedly remanded in prison over the brutal ritual killing of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer and her daughter — a tragedy that sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for tougher punishment against ritual-related crimes.
Meanwhile, in Anambra State, police operatives arrested a 28-year-old suspect, Friday Akonobi, over the alleged abduction and ritual murder of a six-year-old girl. Investigators claimed the case pointed to a wider criminal operation allegedly involving a native doctor based in Enugu, raising fresh fears about organized ritual syndicates operating behind the scenes.
As these disturbing incidents continue to make headlines, religious leaders have also weighed in, condemning the increasing bloodshed.
Speaking on the matter, the Deputy Imam of Ibuku Oluwa Ratibi Mosque in Lagos, Ustaz Jamiu Aro, strongly criticized ritual killings, stressing that Islam rejects murder in every form. According to him, the growing trend is partly fueled by weaknesses in the justice system, where prolonged investigations and legal technicalities sometimes allow suspected offenders to escape punishment.
He also raised eyebrows with claims that greed and desperation for wealth have allegedly infiltrated religious spaces, accusing some religious figures of secretly turning to dark practices in hopes of attracting followers and financial gains.
Observers say the dangerous obsession with quick wealth, political influence, and overnight success may be contributing to the rise in ritual-related crimes, especially during politically sensitive periods when desperation reportedly intensifies.
With families living in fear and communities demanding justice, many Nigerians are now asking one painful question: How many more innocent lives will be lost before this deadly trend is finally stopped?
