“Outrage in Anambra: Lawmakers Move Against Couple Over Shocking Abuse of Little Chiziterem”

A disturbing child abuse case that has left many Nigerians heartbroken has taken a dramatic turn, as the Anambra State House of Assembly has called for the immediate prosecution of Mrs. Chioma Chukwunyere and the arrest of her husband over the alleged torture of a 10-year-old boy, Chiziterem.

The shocking incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across social media platforms, was brought before the state legislature through a motion of urgent public importance presented by Honourable Ifeoma Azikiwe, who represents Onitsha North Constituency One.

According to reports, young Chiziterem was allegedly sent by his father earlier this year to live with a family from his hometown after they reportedly promised to care for him and provide him with an education. Instead, what followed has been described as a nightmare no child should ever endure.

During deliberations at the Assembly, lawmakers heard harrowing allegations that the boy was subjected to repeated physical and emotional abuse. He was allegedly locked inside toilets for extended periods, brutally beaten, and tortured with a heated gas burner that was reportedly pressed against his head and face. The injuries sustained were said to have become severely infected, leaving deep wounds and permanent scars.

Describing the incident as one of the most horrifying cases of child cruelty ever recorded in the state, Honourable Azikiwe urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Women and Social Development, to ensure a thorough investigation and the swift prosecution of all those involved under the provisions of the Child Rights Law.

The lawmakers did not stop there. Several members of the Assembly called for a public trial to ensure transparency and accountability. They argued that charges such as attempted murder, torture, and grievous bodily harm should be considered by investigators.

Other legislators also called for the arrest and investigation of the woman’s husband and other occupants of the compound, raising concerns that additional individuals may have been aware of the abuse or may have played a role in concealing it.

Speaker of the House, Somtochukwu Udeze, who personally visited the victim at the hospital, described the situation as heartbreaking and unacceptable. He stressed the urgent need to strengthen child protection mechanisms across Anambra State and ensure that vulnerable children are safeguarded from abuse.

As part of the Assembly’s resolutions, lawmakers proposed the establishment of Child Rights Desks and emergency reporting hotlines across all 21 local government areas in the state. They also advocated stronger whistleblower protections to encourage citizens to report cases of child abuse without fear of intimidation or retaliation.

The tragic case has reignited conversations about child welfare, guardianship responsibilities, and the need for stricter enforcement of child protection laws. Many Nigerians are now demanding justice for Chiziterem and calling for severe punishment for anyone found guilty.

As investigations continue, all eyes remain on the authorities as citizens await justice for the young boy whose painful story has shaken the nation.
